Murder Death Kill IE6
Stumbled across this today and had to post. There is an incredible and much needed campaign taking place in the web development world right now revolving around the absolute shit sandwich of a browser that is Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. The campaign is simple: Help Web Developers Take Down IE6!
Being involved with the web design process of our association clients on a daily basis, there is one acronym that might as well be a four letter word: IE6. To say IE6 causes us problems would be a drastic understatement.
The premise is fairly simple. Internet Explorer 6 is an antiquated browser that does not support key web standards of today’s world. It should be phased out. Put to bed. Finito. Done.
This is not me just being anti-Microsoft, it’s about Microsoft’s lack of development in the browser market. Since IE7 and IE8 are not available for Windows 2000, IE6 ends up accounting for around 20% of web usage, the vast majority being business users. Ahh, the old 80/20 rule…
As a result of this conundrum, clients pressure designers to ‘force’ sites to work in IE6, and designers, not wanting to lose business, comply, using hacks and workarounds. This wastes time and money. Microsoft needs to fix this, designers need to unite, and we all need to move on.
For all my other WordPress peeps out there, I highly recommend this little WP plugin that allows you to add an IE6 warning to your blog to alert your users why it is an awful idea to use the a non-starndards compliant browser with security holes out the wazoo.
To recap: unite and take down IE6.
